The Indiana Association of Building Officials is again hosting the Indiana Code Education Conference (ICEC) at Horizon Convention Center in Muncie, Indiana. This conference is a great opportunity to participate in excellent education classes including residential, commercial and fire codes.  There will be time to network with other IABO members, exhibitors and others who will be there for the education classes and festivities.

Tuesday, October 18th

Residential Track

  • Title: Residential Electrical Provisions: 2020 Indiana Residential Code vs. 2009 Indiana Electrical Code
  • Course Description: Designed to help clarify the sometimes-confusing application of electrical codes in Indiana this course is designed to compare the two Indiana Electrical Codes and show the differences and similarities between the codes from a residential viewpoint.  Based on the 2009 Indiana Electrical Code and the 2020 Indiana Residential Code the course will cover the electrical chapters in both codes relating to the sections in the residential code.  Because of the technical aspects in these codes class participants are urged to bring both code books, with Indiana amendments, to the class.  This informal, discussion type class will be open for comments and questions from the group.
  • Instructor: Craig Wagner
  • Biography: Craig Wagner spent twenty-two years in the construction industry as a carpenter, crew leader, equipment operator, estimator, and manager before beginning employment in 1991 at the Columbia City/Whitley County Planning and Building Department as the Chief Building Inspector.  He has been a member of Indiana Association of Building Officials (IABO) since 1991 serving as a committee member and chair of various IABO committees including Annual Business Meeting, Bylaws, Code, Finance, Nominating and Scholarship and on the Executive Committee.  Beginning in 1992 Craig has been involved in code development on the state and international levels serving on several code development committees for the State of Indiana and has served as an instructor for inspector and contractor code education classes since 1994.

 

Commercial Track

  • Title: 2014 Indiana Building Code: Building Classification
  • Course Description: This seminar addresses the key issues of the 2014 Indiana Building Code (2012 IBC w/ Indiana amendments) regarding the proper classification of buildings.  The process for correctly evaluating a building for code compliance relies on a systematic approach to the determination of occupancy classification and construction type.  Everything starts with the correct building classification!  A clear understanding of the classification process provides the groundwork for the proper application of many other important code provisions.
  • Instructor: Terrell Stripling
  • Biography: Terrell is a seasoned instructor with 20 years of fire service experience and has also worked in the construction industry. He holds a B.S. degree from Oklahoma State University in Fire Protection Engineering and Technology. His experience in fire prevention, code management and the ability to effectively communicate a pro-active philosophy is reflected in Terrell’s passion for education. At the college level, he has served in the positions of Department Chair and adjunct professor in the Fire Science Department. He utilizes the theory of the code along with hands-on practical application to achieve ICC’s vision of “Protecting the health, safety, and welfare of people creating better buildings and safer communities.”

 

Wednesday, October 19th

Residential Track

  • Title: 2020 Indiana Residential Code: Plumbing Provisions
  • Course Description: This seminar will cover the plumbing provisions of the 2020 Indiana Residential Code including: administration, definitions, general requirements, fixtures, water heaters, water supply and distribution, sanitary drainage, vents, traps, and storm drainage.  Participants will be provided the fundamental knowledge necessary to administer and enforce applicable plumbing requirements of the 2020 InRC.
  • Instructor: Robert Schutz
  • Biography: Robert J. Schutz, P.E., P.S., CBO, has served as an Assistant Architect Administrator at the Ohio Board of Building Standards. While with the State of Ohio, he has oversight of the new Residential Code of Ohio program, including certification of local residential code departments and personnel. Previously, Bob served ICC as Manager of Instructors with responsibilities for the selection, oversight, and quality of ICC's cadre of staff and contract instructors. his varied previous experiences include active military service during the 1980's as an Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) officer; building code enforcement for several central Ohio jurisdictions, including ten years as Chief Building Official (CBO) for the City of Powell where he also served as City Engineer and Director of Public Services; and Chief Engineer, for the Ohio Department of Health where he chaired the state's plumbing advisory board, was chief of plumbing and was a voting member on the Ohio Board of Building Standards. He is experienced in combat construction, facilities engineering and project management as well as having been a plumber, sheet metal worker and brick mason.
  • Mr. Schutz has a civil engineering degree from Ohio Northern University with post graduate studies at the University of Southern California and the Ohio State University in environmental law, land- use planning and public administration. He is a registered Professional Engineer and Professional Surveyor, certified Chief Building Official and holds Ohio certifications as Building Official, Plans Examiner and Inspector for Building, Plumbing, Electrical Safety and Residential. Bob instructs IBC structural and nonstructural seminars, all IRC subjects, mechanical, plumbing and fuel gas codes and administrative topics.

 

Commercial Track

  • Title: 2014 Indiana Fire Code: Fire Protection Systems
  • Course Description: This seminar is designed to guide participants through the 2014 Indiana Fire Code (2012 IFC w/ Indiana amendments) requirements related to fire protection systems (Chapter 9).  These requirements include suppression systems, standpipe systems, automatic fire alarm systems, automatic detection systems and additional fire protection assemblies.
