District 4 of the Indiana Association of Building Inspectors celebrated thirty years of training at the monthly meeting held July 19, 2024. The meeting was held at the Whitley County Government Center in Columbia City and was attended by some of the inspectors from the fifteen counties, and twenty-nine different departments in the district. Seated in the front row are, left, Steve Saylor, North-at-Large Director and, right, Dan Riddle, District 4 Director. The training sessions provide the district inspectors in-depth training in the various codes and laws affecting construction, that are required by state law to be enforced in their jurisdictions, and aids in consistent enforcement between jurisdictions in the district. Each session allows the local inspectors to interact with their peers and compare issues involved in the building inspection process. The training has allowed the members to obtain dozens of certifications as building and fire inspectors from the International Code Council.

The Indiana Association of Building Officials (IABO) District 4 Inspectors met on January 20 for the monthly meeting. The meeting opened with announcements and general discussion on inspection issues brought to the floor by the inspectors. The group then spit into three “teams” and participated in a “Code Feud”. A $25 Ace Hardware gift card was on the line for the winning teams’ member with the most correct answers on questions from the 2020 Indiana Residential Code. The contest prompted many discussions on code issues and the members spent the meeting scanning their code books for answers and challenges to responses. The A-2 team answered the most questions correctly and Mark Shaver, LaGrange County, won the gift card for most individual answers on the winning team. Acting Co-Director Craig Wagner reported “the competition encouraged the members to bring their code books and actively use them to search for the answers to the, sometimes obscure, questions, one of the teams was even studying the code book on the coffee break, since  IABO’s mission is to educate Indiana’s citizens on the building codes this is the obvious place to start, a well-trained inspection community”.

IABO’s District 4 has been meeting monthly since 1994, serving its members, and any IABO member who wishes to attend, with code training and networking opportunities. For more information or if you have questions about the meetings contact Craig Wagner at 260-212-2943.
