Course Description:

This seminar will take an in-depth look at each occupancy classification within the 2014 Indiana Building Code.  This class will identify each classification, their groups, their special requirements, and how they interact with each other from mixed uses, incidental uses, and everything in between.  Upon completion of this seminar, the student should have a firm understanding of each classification, which will help them assign the correct group in the planning phase, assist with occupant loads and life safety requirements unique to each group in the plan review phase, and also act a checklist of sorts during the inspection phase, to ensure each element is applied correctly to the appropriate use.

Instructor:  Kenneth Seal

Husband, Father, Soldier, Building Commissioner.  Kenneth Seal has held many titles over the course of his life and career.  Starting in the construction industry at the age of 14, Kenneth has spent nearly three decades working in roles including laborer, carpenter, foreman, and superintendent.  While honing these skills Kenneth also heard the call to military service and served in the United States Army for more than two decades, including seven overseas tours.  Kenneth’s foray into inspections began in 2015 with the City of Indianapolis and continues today with the City of Greenwood, where he serves as building commissioner.  Kenneth also serves as the Second Vice President of the Indiana Association of Building Officials (IABO), he was the 2022 Nick Nicholson Education Award recipient, and he received the 2025 Earl E.
