NFPA 13: Introduction to Water-based Fire Protection Systems

A training seminar sponsored by the Indiana Association of Building Officials, Inc. a chapter of the International Code Council, Inc.


Date: Wednesday, July 21, 2021

  • Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m.
  • Class will start at 9:00 a.m.
  • There will be 1-hour allotted for lunch (lunch will not be provided)
  • Class will conclude at 4:00 p.m.

The class is limited to 75 registrants.  No registrations will be accepted after July 14, and no walk-ins will be accepted the day of the class.

*IABO has applied for funding through the Statewide Fire and Building Safety Education Fund (675 IAC 12-11).  Please DO NOT pay in advance as an invoice will be sent following the class.


This course consists of six contact hours and earns 0.6 ICC PPN CEU's. 


Course Description:

This full day seminar describes the basic types of sprinklers, how various sprinkler systems operate, the various types and classes of Standpipe systems and how they operate, the types of fire pumps and how they operate, an overview of Inspection, Testing and Maintenance, and an overview of what all inspectors and firefighters should know about these various systems both pre and post fire events.


Presenter: Ron Ritchey, National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA)

Ron Ritchey began his career with the National Fire Sprinkler Association after retiring from the Lafayette Fire Department (Indiana) with 23 years of service, sixteen of those years as Assistant Chief of the Fire Prevention Bureau.  He is now responsible for the oversight of membership services for the five-state region in the Great Lakes area and travels throughout the United States conducting training programs for water-based fire protection systems.  Mr. Ritchey holds numerous state and national certifications, and his education includes earning an Associate’s Degree in Public Safety and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management.  He has developed and presented many training seminars for code officials, code consultants, building owners, and design professionals throughout the country and currently serves on the International Code Council’s Fire Code Interpretation Committee (ICC-FCIC).  Ron is a member of the National Fire Protection Association, the International Code Council, numerous Fire Chief and Fire Inspector associations, and is a Certified Fire Protection Specialist.

Registration Deadline:

The registration deadline is July 14, 2021 at 11:59 pm.  Registrations will not be accepted after July 14.

After registration is successfully submitted a confirmation email will be sent to the email address entered during registration.


Cancellation Policy:
All cancellations must be received in writing no later than July 14, 2021 to avoid penalty.  All late cancellations and no shows will be billed $50.  Faxed cancellations must be verified they were received.  It is the responsibility of the registrant to make the verification.  Emergencies will be dealt with on an individual basis.


Attendance Notice Regarding Certificates/Funding: 

Indiana Association of Building Officials is committed to complying with the requirements of the Division of Fire and Building Safety, as they administer the education fund.

As Indiana Association of Building Officials submits the request for funding on behalf of the membership, IABO will not submit an attendee’s name who does NOT attend the entire class; failure to attend the entire class renders that attendee ineligible for funding.
