Advanced Legal Aspects of Code Administration for Building Officials and Inspectors

This is a virtual class and will be held via Zoom. The link to Zoom and a PDF of the handout will be emailed directly from ICC to registrants. The course completion certificate will be emailed by ICC several days after the class.
This course consists of six contact hours and earns .6 ICC PPN CEU's
*IABO has applied for funding through the Statewide Fire and Building Safety Education Fund (675 IAC 12-11). If you are a current IABO member, please DO NOT pay in advance as an invoice will be sent after the class.
PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT the same course that was offered by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security on December 3, 2020. This is the "advanced course" that was referenced numerous times throughout the presentation and was requested by a large number of individuals at the conclusion of the seminar.Course Description:
This course covers the terminology, concepts, and principles of legal issues that affect building officials and inspectors in the administration of their duties. It will assist the building official or inspector, or persons interested in said discipline in understanding the legal concepts related to the model building codes. The course will address the specific legal issues that building officials and inspectors face in carrying out their duties and will focus on administrative issues such as the permit, inspection plan review and appeal processes as well as enforcement issues including stop work orders, notices of violation, and complaints. Writing administrative search warrants and legal issues and liability specific to building officials and inspectors will also be covered.
Presenter: Linda S. Pieczynski
Linda S. Pieczynski is a former assistant state's attorney and municipal prosecutor in DuPage County, Illinois. She devotes her legal practice to teaching and writing about the legal aspects of code administration including building, property maintenance, fire and zoning codes. She conducts trainings nationwide for the International Code Council (ICC). She is the author of numerous code related books including The Building Process Simplified, The Residential Inspector's Guide to Codes, Forms and Complaints, The Fire Inspector's Guide to Codes, Forms and Complaints, The Building Official's and Inspector's Guide to Codes, Forms and Complaints, and The Property Maintenance Inspector's Guide to Codes, Forms and Complaints, all published by Cengage. She also has served as editor of revisions to the Legal Aspects to Code Administration published by ICC.
The registration deadline is Sunday, December 13, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. No late registrations will be accepted.
After registration is successfully submitted a confirmation email will be sent to the email address entered during registration.
All cancelations must be received in writing no later than December 13, 2020 to avoid penalty. All late cancelations and no shows will be billed $50. Faxed cancellations must be verified they were received. It is the responsibility of the registrant to make the verification. Emergencies will be dealt with on an individual basis.

Indiana Association of Building Officials is committed to complying with the requirements of the Division of Fire and Building Safety, as they administer the education fund.
As Indiana Association of Building Officials submits the request for funding on behalf of the membership, IABO will not submit an attendee’s name who does NOT attend the entire class; failure to attend the entire class renders that attendee ineligible for funding.
